are working overtime. so up first here, paul ryan and joe biden battling it out in the bluegrass state, and unlike last week's presidential debate, this one had a little bit of fire. the vice president coming out swinging, ryan keeping cool and counterpunching. >> so let's go to the score cards. the cnn orc poll taken right after the debate showed 48% of the voters who watched thought paul ryan won. 44% favored joe biden. that's basically a statistical draw. senior congressional correspondent dana bash is live from danville, kentucky this morning, and dana, this was a much more spirited debate this time around, a debate with a capital "d." >> reporter: oh, it sure was. i was in the hall last night, and it was rocking and rolling from the beginning. pretty much right through the entire 90 minutes. there was some grimacing and grinning, a lot of it actually on the left. there was some smirking on the right, but all in all it was quite a substantive debate on the central issues of the day. these were two men who both came ready to tangle. >> i don't know what world these guys are in. >> r

to prosper melissa: it was a war of words between vice president joe biden and gop hopeful paul ryan in their first and only debate. the candidates clashed over foreign policy, spending, taxes and everything else. for more on last night's debate, i'm joined by dan clifton, head of policy research at strategies research partners. thanks for joining us. what was your take? >> first it is very hard to decide who the winner was of this election. melissa: of the debate you mean. >> i mean vice president biden was really targeting to try to get democrats more energized after last week's debate. melissa: yeah. >> on the other side paul ryan was showing if something could happen he united states. i think they both met their bar what they were trying to do but it was very different than last week where there was a clear winner, mitt romney beat barack obama. that is not the case in this. melissa: i felt watching it last night sort of each side was nodding along and saying my guy did a great job, my guy won. it seemed very sort of even across the board. do you think that is a fair assessment?

president joe biden. it will be ryan's first debate on the national stage. with the race so close there is extra pressure for him to turn in a clutch performance. >> vice president biden travels to the debate site later today. he had several mock debates with the paul ryan stand-in, maryland congressman chris van holland. who has been with biden all week helping him prep, and a sign of how good he feels about his prospects, his first campaign event after the debate will be in wisconsin, right in paul ryan's back yard. martha raddatz moderates the debate and we will carry it live. >>> as for the top of the ticket, there are questions this morning about where mitt romney stands on abortion. romney said in an interview tuesday that he has no plans for abortion legislation if elected. but anti-abortion advocates reminded him of his pledge to do everything in his power to promote a culture of life. and so on the stump in ohio, romney reaffirmed that he is indeed pro-life. in an interview with abc news, president obama accused romney of trying to cloud his true stance on abortion. speak
